I don’t drink that many flavored beverages besides coffee, so when I see a coffee based product that includes additional benefits like protein, I’m immediately interested. With that in mind, I picked up Naked Nutrition’s Protein Coffee to give it a taste test to see if this is something I want to drink instead of a normal cup of coffee or maybe even as a pre-workout pick me up, here are my thoughts:
Ingredients: The ingredient list is short, whey protein, coffee, coconut sugar, MCT powder, cocoa, sea salt and a couple of more things. There’s not much in there which is why they are able to create a product with 20g of protein, 5g of sugar, 10g of carbs and 2.5g of saturated fat.
Comparing this to a similar sized drink from your favorite drive thru coffee chain and you could drink half of the 17 serving container before you consumed the same amount of sugar. The bottom line is as far as coffee goes, this is one of the healthiest options available and the only one I’ve ever seen with this much protein in it.
Taste: There’s not much in the ingredient list so you may be thinking it doesn’t taste good, but you would be wrong. This stuff is delicious. It is not overpoweringly sweet but sweet enough to get some good flavor. While some drinks it feels like you all you can taste is protein, Naked Protein Coffee tastes primarily like delicious coffee with almost no protein flavor.
Use: Each serving is two scoops and contains 95mg of caffeine. At a time when it feels like every product is trying to push 200-300mg on you at minimum, I really like the lower caffeine content. It allows me to enjoy a cup or maybe even two without getting jittery. If I’m having other caffeinated products throughout the day, it also means I can likely still have a cup of this without exceeding the amount of caffeine I’m interested in consuming.
The powdered nature of it means I can travel with it no problem whether driving in my car or flying across the US. The coffee can be served hot or iced. While you would think the hot version mixes easier, it is actually the iced version that mixes better. The protein doesn’t quite mix as well in the hot water so be sure to stir thoroughly. For both version I simply used a spoon in my drink, no shaker cup or blender and it mixed adequately.
Additionally, this is one of the few caffeinated products I would be willing to use pre-run, since it is on the lower end of caffeine. Plus, if 95 mg is still too high for you, you can always just use one scoop or if 95 mg is too low, add in more scoops. The ability to vary the dosage makes this very appealing regardless of what you plan on using it for.
Overall: I really like this product in taste, price and what’s in the powder. I will 100% order this again in the future. The option to have protein and caffeine in a powder form that tastes delicious without a lot of additives is something I would continue to come back to. If you like coffee or want a supplement line that doesn’t have a lot of excess ingredients, you need to look into Naked Nutrition’s complete lineup.
