Obstacle course racing has always been built on one thing: community. Not curated circles. Not filtered friendships. Not fear‑based motivation. Community — the messy, joyful, diverse, come‑as‑you‑are kind that makes race mornings feel like home.
That’s why the recent Spartan post — the one claiming your friends’ bodies, habits, and life outcomes “increase your probability” of becoming like them — hit wrong for so many of us. It wasn’t just tone‑deaf. It was harmful, and it doesn’t belong in OCR.
OCR is not a contagion model. It’s a community.
The idea that having an “obese friend” increases your own probability by 45% is not motivation. It’s stigma. It frames human beings as risks, relationships as liabilities, and community as something to guard against instead of something to build.
OCR Buddy exists for the exact opposite reason.
We connect athletes. We welcome newcomers. We celebrate every body, every pace, every story. We lift people up — we don’t warn others about them.
Fear‑based messaging doesn’t make people stronger. It makes them smaller.
When a major brand pushes the idea that your friends’ bodies or habits are dangerous to your success, it encourages:
- judgment instead of support
- exclusion instead of belonging
- shame instead of growth
- curated circles instead of community
This is not the OCR culture we’ve spent years building.
OCR is where people come to feel capable, not categorized. It’s where people come to be encouraged, not evaluated. It’s where people come to find connection, not contagion.
We can do better — and we must.
Spartan is a pillar of the OCR world. Their messaging matters. Their tone sets norms. Their posts ripple through the community.
And when those posts promote fear, stigma, or body‑based risk framing, they undermine the very spirit of the sport.
We’re not asking Spartan to be perfect. We’re asking them to be responsible.
Motivation should lift people. Not isolate them. Not shame them. Not turn community into a threat.
OCR grows when everyone feels welcome.
The future of OCR depends on accessibility, encouragement, and belonging. It depends on people seeing themselves in this sport — not being told their friendships or bodies make them a liability.
We can push ourselves without pushing people out. We can be strong without being cruel. We can be competitive without being exclusionary.
Spartan, we love this sport. Help us protect what makes it powerful.
