In a recent article by Runner’s World 92% of women and 28% of men have felt unsafe running. Luckily for you, I have 20 years of military experience working in Special Forces and 20+ years of running experience (that includes a decade of OCR specific training) to apply to the topic. Add in the simple methodology taught by Tiga Tactics (two cousins Dr. Conrad Bui and Patrick Vuong with more than a dozen black belts between them) and you’ve got my latest book “Run If You Can, Destroy If You Must.”
While most self-defense books and companies will jump right into groin kicks and palm strikes, they are missing out on the most important parts of self-protection. They gloss over situational awareness and stacking the deck in your favor. My book doesn’t. You’ll get three distinct sections focused on mindset, skillset and toolset.
The mindset portion teaches not only situational awareness but the willingness to survive if faced with a violent encounter. What do you do if threatened by someone with a gun? How can you modify behavior to reduce problems? Plus, suggestions on how to improve your situational awareness via practical advice instead of “just pay attention more.” This mindset portion is the most important part, which as a OCR athlete/runner, you’ve experienced by pushing harder in races than you can in training.
The skillset is the actual skills you need to survive a physical altercation. Yes, there are some basic strikes in there, but I think you’ll find that it is much simpler than you imagined. Despite knowing variations from more than a dozen different styles, Tiga Tactics owners have simplified it to 4x effective “go to” options when faced with a real world attack.
Finally, the toolset portion addresses the problems with self-defense keychains and other tools people carry for self-protection. If your solution to self-defense is buying a keychain and simply putting it on your keys, you are in for a rude awakening. The book runs through the pros and cons for most of the common items people carry for self-protection. Plus there is a methodology for how to analyze any tool you might decide to carry that’s not listed in the book or that comes out in the future.
Pick up a copy of “Run If You Can, Destroy If You Must” today! It is available now on Amazon and off my website Strength & Speed. The more good people we make more formidable, the harder time bad guys will have finding and successfully harassing victims. Even if you are a non-violent person, the strength (both physical and mental) you will gain from absorbing this knowledge will allow you to be peaceful from a position of strength.
