Where OCR Meets Play: Rise of the Obstacles

by Mike Kelley / Wednesday, 03 June 2026 / Published in Blog

Rise of the Obstacles OCR was held at Obstacle Wonderland on 30 and 31 May. The kids races were on Saturday, adult races on Sunday.

I had no doubt going into this that it would be a fun time. The brand is owned by Gabe Capobianchi and anyone who knows or has met Gabe knows that his zest for life would show in his races.

The Sunday races include a 100m sprint and a 5km “endurance” run. Runners had two tries at the 100m for best time (grouped by age) and a chance to win a trophy.

The endurance run was an untimed fun run.

The endurance course was a three lap course. The terrain was technical w low hills. The trail was rocky and required concentration if you valued your ankles. Some obstacles were out on the trail but most were situated around the common area (festival). The setup allowed spectators to watch and take pictures of people on the obstacles.

The obstacles were a mix of familiar rigs with an occasional twist thrown in here and there. A few of the obstacles were multi lane to allow racers to choose different difficulty levels on different laps. Target shooting, slip n slide and a zip line finish were among the unusual tasks.

I would be remiss if I did not comment on the finisher medals. This amazing design comes from Gabe who designed and printed (3D) them himself. The main medal is for being there and there are add ons for completing certain individual tasks. The pictured medal had three add ons for completing the water obstacle, one for completing the endurance (dragon slayer) and one for deadeye dragon (hitting three dragon targets in 30 seconds using only three paintball shots).

This race is about FUN so if you are looking for financial awards or points towards some OCR standing or other then this is, most likely, not for you. If, on the other hand, you would like to spend the day with people who share a passion for the experience of OCR and see what the

imagination of Gabe has in store for you then don’t miss this one.

I will definitely be back!
