Playout is the card/fitness games started by an Obstacle Course Racing (OCR) athlete to get you, your family, friends and kids moving. With five different options when you go to the website you may be wondering, which one is the best for me? Here’s a quick comparison of their decks along with some of my thoughts and links to a more in depth review of many of them:
Playout The Game: The original Playout is still a best seller and for a good reason. They took bodyweight exercises removed the thought behind coming up with your daily workout and allowed you to just follow the cards in front of you. Read my review on Strength & Speed website.
Conclusion: Bodyweight exercises that you can take with you anywhere and are fun. Best for those looking for general fitness with no equipment. Order yours here.
Playout 2: If you liked Playout but want more this is definitely for you. More exercises that expand upon the already established formula for success developed in the original game. If you haven’t bought any Playout Game yet and want one that includes partner workouts, this is also a really good option.
Conclusion: Buddy workouts and more of the original. The buddy workouts make this arguably my favorite deck so I would push this towards the top of your list. Order yours here.
Playout The OCR Game: If you are an OCR athlete, since you are reading this on OCR Buddy, this would be the first deck I would buy. The exercises are specifically designed to prepare you for OCR. You don’t have to try to use a logic leap to figure out how they apply, every card specifically lists how each exercise prepares you for OCR.
Conclusion: Best for OCR athletes. Order yours here.
Playout The Ninja Game: Similar to the OCR variant, this deck provides bodyweight specific exercises designed to help you prepare for ninja by mimicking movements. You’ll still have to make it to a ninja gym if you want to make it far in American Ninja Warrior but this deck provides great supplemental training that is targeted for ninja performance. For me personally, the closest two ninja gyms are both more than 40 minutes away so this is great supplement work between trips to the ninja gym.
Conclusion: Best for short course OCR, ninja warrior athletes or those wanting to prepare for events like ninja warrior. Order yours here.
Playout the Family Deck: Honestly you can use any of the above decks for family playing, but the family deck was designed to maximize this fun. While I had to modify some of the exercises and events in Playout 2 for my youngest daughter, the Family Deck takes out the guess work for you.
Conclusion: For those that are looking for more family fun with a little less intensity on the workouts. Order yours here.
Overall: Playout is constantly coming out with new great products. Be sure to check on their website for their latest card decks.
You’ll find you can’t go wrong with any of the decks and which one you pick is largely personal preference. They each have their benefits and I like each one for a different reason. I like the exercises in Playout the most for general conditioning, I like the buddy workouts in Playout 2 because I think they are the most fun and as an OCR athlete, I like the sport specificity of Playout The OCR Game. Pick up your deck today, start training and I would remind you to have fun, but with Playout…that’s inevitable.
